Some sponsors limit the number of applications an institution can submit in response to a particular program announcement. If the number of applicants exceeds the available limit, the institution must decide which proposals are most competitive or best aligned with institutional priorities. The process is different depending on whether the limit applies to Rutgers University – Newark or to Rutgers University-wide.

Rutgers University – Newark

For funding opportunities where RU-N is required to select a limited number of applicants, the dissemination and selection process is outlined below.

All members of the RU-N Research Community will be informed of the limited submission Call for Proposals (CFP) as far ahead of the sponsor deadline as possible. The email will also set a specified date by which an interested faculty member needs to inform Joe Broderick, Senior Grant Facilitator ( and Cc Brandi Williams ( of his/her interest.

If the number of interested faculty members exceeds the limit, each interested applicant will be asked to complete the RU-N Limited Submission Internal Proposal and submit to the RU-N Research Office all required items, including his/her Dean’s recommendation.

The RU-N Research Office will select a panel to review each candidate’s pre-proposal. An ad hoc committee of some members of the RU-N Research Advisory Committee may help with the review and selection recommendation.  Selected applicants will be notified as quickly as possible by email with a copy to the applicant’s Dean, Chair, and your Grants Specialist.
