Tuition Remission
Overview
The RU-N Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP) provides tuition funding (up to 9 credits per semester) for PhD students supported by research funding from external sources. Students funded by internal sources such as teaching assistantships, seed grants, or start-up funds are not eligible.
Eligibility & Qualifications:
- The external funding must fully cover the student’s graduate stipend, benefits and fees
- The PhD student can be from any school at Rutgers–Newark
- The student must be in good academic standing
Terms and conditions:
- Applications for Tuition Remission are due within the semester for which the reimbursement is requested; that is, by April 30th for the Spring semester and by November 30th for the Fall semester
- The tuition amount is limited to the in-state level of tuition of the student’s respective school
- The student’s registration (number of credits) will be verified before the final approval is granted
- The student’s current term bill must accompany the Tuition Remission form; Funds will be released after the add/drop date of the respective semester
- New requests for Tuition Remission must be filled every semester (The request form must be submitted during the semester in which the funds are being requested)
- Applications for Tuition Remission are reviewed on a rolling basis
- The Tuition Remission program is subject to funding availability and related budgetary constraints, which may limit the number of applications approved each semester
- Principle Investigators with external grants including indirect costs may receive priority

The Principal Investigator (PI) must complete the form below and email to ORSP’s Senior Administrative Assistant, Brandi Williams: brandi.williams99@rutgers.edu. The form requires information about the external grant as well as the GL or Project String where the Tuition Remission funds should be transferred once approved.
